Who is hiring on a data center build, and what they ask us for

Four kinds of company staff a data center site, and Amundson Group recruits for all four. The general contractor needs superintendents, project managers, project engineers, schedulers, quality and safety managers who have run a hyperscale or colocation campus before. The electrical trade partner, which usually carries the largest share of the contract and the schedule risk, needs electrical superintendents, project managers and QA and QC leaders who understand medium voltage distribution, switchgear and the commissioning sequence. The mechanical trade partner needs the same seats for chilled water, piping and air handling. And the owner or its construction manager needs owner’s representatives, commissioning managers and MEP coordinators who can hold all three to the integrated schedule. The ask is the same from each: people who have done it on a live site, available before the next campus starts.

The seats that decide a data center schedule

  • MEP coordinator and BIM or VDC manager: the clash and sequence work that decides whether the electrical rooms close on time.
  • Commissioning manager and commissioning agent: level one through level five, integrated systems testing, and the turnover package the owner signs.
  • Electrical and mechanical superintendents: the field leaders who run the trade partner’s crews when the schedule compresses.
  • Project manager and project executive: the money, the owner relationship and the change order log on a job where a week of float is worth more than most contractors earn in margin.
  • QA and QC manager, safety manager, scheduler and estimator: the seats a mission critical owner audits.

Amundson Group keeps a written page for most of these seats, among them the data center superintendent, the MEP coordinator, the commissioning manager, the electrical superintendent and the project manager.

Pay at placement for the people who build data centers

The October 2026 release of the Construction Placement Pay Index, built from Amundson Group’s own placements across every sector it serves, puts the national median base at placement at $118,750 for an estimator, up 19% in a year, $112,500 for a project manager, $112,200 for a superintendent, $100,000 for a safety manager and $93,340 for a project engineer. Data center seats sit above those medians for the same title, and traveling roles carry per diem on top of base. The index publishes a role only with 9 or more placements in the window, so it reports the construction market as a whole rather than a data center cut; the live index and the per diem guide cover what moves the number on a mission critical job.

The markets we recruit data center builders for

Northern Virginia, Dallas and Fort Worth, Phoenix, Atlanta, Columbus and central Ohio, Chicago, Austin and San Antonio, the Texas corridor out to Abilene and West Texas, and the newer campuses across the Southeast, the Mountain West and the Midwest. Amundson Group is headquartered in Houston and recruits for all of them from there, with a network of 90,000+ construction professionals and a South Africa based sourcing team that keeps a search moving overnight. Most data center searches close with a traveling candidate, so the firm screens for willingness to travel, per diem expectations and rotation before a resume reaches you. The Northern Virginia, Dallas and Fort Worth, Phoenix and Atlanta pages cover the largest markets one by one.

How a data center search runs

  • Intake the same day: the campus, the phase, the trade, the pay band and the travel terms.
  • First qualified resumes in 7 hours on average: people who have built a live site, drawn from the firm’s placement record and targeted outreach.
  • A vetted shortlist within 7 days: every candidate interviewed by a recruiter who speaks the trade, commissioning and electrical experience checked against the job rather than the resume, references and pay confirmed.
  • Interviews around the site’s schedule, an offer built to close, a check in after mobilization.

Fees are agreed before the search starts and are owed only when you hire. Amundson Group is construction only: it does not recruit for data center operations, facilities or IT, and it says so when a role belongs to one of those.

Questions we hear on this market

Which data center construction roles are hardest to fill in 2026?

Commissioning managers, MEP coordinators and electrical superintendents with a completed hyperscale campus behind them. The pool is small, every campus wants the same people, and most of them are already on a site. Amundson Group reaches them through its placement record and its network rather than job boards.

Do you recruit for the electrical and mechanical trade partners, or only general contractors?

Both, and the owners’ construction managers as well. The electrical trade partner usually carries the largest share of a data center contract, and electrical superintendents, project managers and QA and QC leaders are a large part of the firm’s data center placements.

Do data center construction roles pay more than heavy civil?

For the same title, yes, and traveling roles add per diem on top of base. The October 2026 Placement Pay Index puts the national median superintendent placement at $112,200 and the median project manager at $112,500 across every sector; data center seats sit above those medians.

How quickly can Amundson Group staff a new data center campus?

First qualified resumes in 7 hours on average and a vetted shortlist within 7 days per role. For a campus that needs a full field team, the firm runs the searches in parallel and sequences the starts to the schedule.
