Who recruits for data center construction in Northern Virginia?
Amundson Group recruits the construction leaders who build Northern Virginia’s data centers: superintendents, project managers, project engineers, MEP coordinators and commissioning leaders for the general contractors and trade partners working in Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties. We are a construction-only recruiter headquartered in Houston, veteran-owned and named to the Inc. 5000 in 2024 and 2025, and we place data center talent across the United States.
We recruit only for infrastructure and industrial-scale builders: data center, heavy civil, site development, paving, rail, tunnels, wastewater and underground utilities. We do not place commercial, multifamily or energy roles. That focus matters here, because the people who deliver a mission-critical building in Northern Virginia usually came up through the same heavy civil, site and utility work our network already covers.
Northern Virginia data center construction in 2026: the numbers
- 2,420 MW of data center capacity under construction in the first half of 2026, up 16.5%, with every 2026 delivery already committed to a tenant (CBRE, H1 2026; CBRE Northern Virginia).
- More than 5 GW of contracted data center load added to Dominion Energy’s pipeline since the end of 2025, an 11% increase on the more than 48 GW it had contracted in December 2025 (Data Center Dynamics, August 2026).
- 2,800 fewer jobs in mining, logging and construction in the Arlington-Alexandria-Reston division from August 2025 to August 2026, a 3% drop (AGC metro employment table).
- 82% of Virginia contractors with superintendent openings, and 77% with project manager or supervisor openings, call them hard to fill (AGC and NCCER 2026 Workforce Survey, Virginia).
Where the work is
Loudoun County is still the center of the market, and other localities, including Stafford County, are seeing more data center interest (McGuireWoods, September 2026). One Stafford County campus is planned at more than 1 GW across 19 buildings on about 500 acres, and its first building topped out in May 2026 (Data Center Dynamics).
Not every project gets built. A 23 million square foot proposal in Prince William County ended in July 2026 after courts voided its rezonings (Virginia Business). That makes the campuses already approved and under way more valuable, and the people who can run them harder to find.
What changed in 2026
Three changes landed within eight days in September 2026. Loudoun supervisors voted on September 15 to move toward pausing new data center and some substation approvals for up to 12 months. Executive Order 22, signed September 18, bars state agencies from signing nondisclosure agreements on data center projects and speeds up noise rules. Prince William supervisors voted 8-0 on September 22 to largely end data centers allowed without special approval (McGuireWoods, September 2026).
In June, the General Assembly passed a budget with a data center electricity tax of $0.011 per kWh, capped at $600 million a year, and left the sales tax exemption in place (Cardinal News, June 2026). Dominion’s batching system for new power requests also keeps extending delivery timelines for new projects (CBRE Northern Virginia).
What it means for hiring in Northern Virginia
Many of the new rules apply mainly to new data centers rather than existing ones (McGuireWoods). With every 2026 delivery committed and gigawatts of data center load already contracted on Dominion’s system, contractors will be staffing superintendents, MEP leaders and commissioning teams in Northern Virginia for years.
People are the constraint. Construction employment in the Arlington-Alexandria-Reston division fell by 2,800 jobs in a year, yet most Virginia contractors with superintendent or project manager openings still call them hard to fill. In the AGC survey, 63% of Virginia firms gave craft workers bigger raises than a year earlier and 70% did the same for salaried staff (AGC Virginia results). Filling a Northern Virginia seat usually means recruiting someone who is employed, busy and not looking.
The roles we place on Northern Virginia data center builds
- General superintendents, superintendents and assistant superintendents
- MEP and electrical superintendents
- Project executives, senior project managers and project managers
- Electrical project managers and project engineers
- MEP coordinators and commissioning managers
- Schedulers, estimators and preconstruction leads
- QA/QC managers and safety managers
The longest searches here are general superintendents who have closed out a hyperscale building, electrical superintendents who know switchgear and generator lead times, and commissioning managers who can run integrated systems testing on a live campus.
