What a data center commissioning manager does
A data center commissioning manager (Cx manager) is the person who proves the building works before the owner turns on a single server. The role owns the commissioning plan from design review through start-up, functional performance testing and integrated systems testing, then carries the facility through handover to the operations team. In practice that means coordinating the general contractor, MEP subcontractors, equipment vendors, third-party commissioning agents and the owner’s operations staff around one script and one schedule.
Day to day, the job is equal parts technical and managerial: reviewing sequences of operation for electrical and mechanical systems, witnessing factory and site tests, chasing down deficiencies, running pull-the-plug scenarios on the critical power and cooling chain, and signing off that the facility can hold load under failure conditions. It is a critical path role. If commissioning slips, the ready-for-service date slips with it.
Where the jobs are in 2026
Commissioning manager openings follow the hyperscale and colocation build pipeline, and that pipeline is concentrated. Per the 2026 market research we track, the heaviest demand sits in Northern Virginia, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, and Sun Belt markets like Phoenix and Austin. Most of those hubs overlap with where Amundson Group has its deepest roots, including Texas, Georgia, Phoenix and the Virginia corridor, and we recruit and place data center professionals nationwide beyond them.
Expect a mix of employers: general contractors building a dedicated commissioning function, third-party commissioning firms, owner’s representatives, and the hyperscalers and colocation operators themselves hiring client-side Cx leadership. Many roles are project-based with heavy travel, and a growing share are regional positions that oversee several campuses at once.
Why these roles are so hard to fill
Per Kelly-derived reporting cited in 2026 industry coverage, 66% of data center operators say they cannot find or retain enough commissioning professionals, and AFCOM’s 2026 executive summary reports that 87% of respondents see workforce gaps affecting operations. One 2026 market estimate puts total data center employment at a potential 650,000 positions, with as many as 340,000 of those still open, and names commissioning leaders among the hardest roles to fill.
The shortage is structural. Commissioning managers need years of MEP or critical facilities experience before they are trusted to run a Cx program, and the number of people who have carried a large campus through integrated systems testing is small relative to the number of campuses breaking ground.
What hiring managers screen for
- Depth in critical MEP systems: medium-voltage switchgear, generators, UPS, chillers, CRAH units and controls, not just general construction oversight.
- Hands-on integrated systems testing experience, ideally as the person running the script rather than observing it.
- Client-side handover experience, including turnover documentation, training operations staff and closing out the deficiency log.
- Scheduling discipline and the ability to hold subcontractors and vendors to a commissioning calendar under ready-for-service pressure.
- Communication skills to brief owners, GCs and operations leaders who each see the project differently.
How candidates can position themselves
If you are moving into commissioning from a mechanical or electrical superintendent, project engineer or field service background, lead with the systems you have started up and the tests you have witnessed. Quantify the scale in megawatts of IT load or campus size, name the owners and GCs you have delivered for, and be specific about your role in integrated systems testing. Certifications from recognized commissioning bodies help, but a track record of clean handovers on live campuses is what gets you the interview.
On compensation, commissioning managers sit at the upper end of data center construction pay, and location, employer type and travel expectations move the number meaningfully. Frequently asked questions
What experience do you need to become a data center commissioning manager?
Most commissioning managers come up through mechanical or electrical construction, critical facilities operations, or field service for major equipment vendors. Employers want several years of hands-on work with medium-voltage power distribution, generators, UPS systems, chilled water or air-cooled plants and building controls, plus direct experience running or supporting integrated systems testing on a live campus. Project management skills matter as much as technical depth, because the role coordinates the GC, subcontractors, vendors and the owner’s operations team around one commissioning schedule. Commissioning certifications are a plus, but documented clean handovers on data center projects carry the most weight.
Where are data center commissioning manager jobs concentrated in 2026?
Per the 2026 market research we track, demand is heaviest in Northern Virginia, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, and Sun Belt markets such as Phoenix and Austin, because that is where hyperscale and colocation construction is concentrated. Roles are offered by general contractors, third-party commissioning firms, owner’s representatives and the operators themselves. Many positions are project-based with significant travel, and regional roles overseeing multiple campuses are increasingly common. Amundson Group recruits data center professionals nationwide, with its deepest roots in Texas, the Southeast, Phoenix, Denver and the Virginia corridor.
Why is it so hard to hire data center commissioning managers?
The talent pool is small and the project pipeline is large. Per Kelly-derived reporting cited in 2026 industry coverage, 66% of data center operators cannot find or retain enough commissioning professionals, and AFCOM’s 2026 executive summary says 87% of respondents report workforce gaps affecting operations. Commissioning leadership requires years of MEP or critical facilities experience before someone can be trusted to run a program, and relatively few people have carried a full campus through integrated systems testing. Hiring managers who move quickly on qualified candidates, and who use recruiters with a focused data center network, fill these roles far faster than those relying on job postings alone.
How much does a data center commissioning manager earn?
Commissioning managers sit toward the top of data center construction compensation, reflecting how scarce the skill set is and how directly the role controls the ready-for-service date. Pay varies with location, employer type (GC, commissioning firm or owner), travel requirements and the scale of campuses you have delivered.
