Who recruits for data center construction in Abilene and West Texas?
Amundson Group recruits the construction leaders who build data centers in Abilene and across West Texas: superintendents, project managers, project engineers, MEP coordinators and commissioning leaders for the general contractors and trade partners on campuses in Abilene and in Shackelford, Haskell and Armstrong counties. We are a construction-only recruiter headquartered in Houston, veteran-owned and named to the Inc. 5000 in 2024 and 2025, with our deepest roots in Texas.
We recruit only for infrastructure and industrial-scale builders: data center, heavy civil, site development, paving, rail, tunnels, wastewater and underground utilities. We do not place commercial, multifamily or energy roles. West Texas campuses depend on leaders who travel in, and our network is built around the heavy civil, site and infrastructure people who are used to working where the job is.
West Texas data center construction in 2026: the numbers
- About 2.9 GW of data center capacity under construction in West Texas at the end of 2025, second in the Americas only to Virginia (Cushman & Wakefield).
- Top five by 2028: CBRE expects West Texas to be one of the top five colocation markets by 2028 (CBRE, H1 2026).
- 17 large loads, about 6.6 GW, mostly data centers across the ERCOT grid, had cleared every ERCOT step except final approval to switch on as of August 2026 (Utility Dive, August 2026).
- About 5,700 jobs in mining, logging and construction in the Abilene metro in August 2026, up 100 in a year (AGC).
Where the work is
Abilene is the hub, with more campuses in nearby Shackelford and Haskell counties and in Armstrong County in the Panhandle (Data Center Dynamics; Bisnow). CBRE also points to large-scale projects in Wilbarger, Gray, Roberts, Ector and Reeves counties (CBRE).
An eight-building, 1.2 GW AI campus in Abilene topped out its last building in November 2025, with about 7,000 tradespeople on site each day, and Epoch AI expects the full 1.2 GW in late 2026 (Data Center Dynamics; Epoch AI). A 10-building, 1.4 GW campus in Shackelford County, with more than $25 billion of planned investment, broke ground in December 2025 (Data Center Dynamics). New data centers in Haskell and Armstrong counties are part of a $40 billion Texas investment plan running through 2027 (Bisnow).
Power and the 2026 Texas grid audit
West Texas has land and power potential, but connecting to the grid is the bottleneck. On August 3, 2026, Texas froze new data center grid connections pending a statewide audit, and ERCOT is set to file its audit reports by December 10, 2026 (Akin Gump; ERCOT). Oncor’s plans include about $5 billion of high-voltage transmission for the Permian Basin (Utility Dive, August 2026).
What it means for hiring in West Texas
West Texas has the projects but not the people. The Abilene metro’s whole mining, logging and construction workforce was about 5,700 jobs in August 2026, while a single campus has had about 7,000 tradespeople on site each day. Most of the workforce, and most of the field leadership, travels in.
That makes travel terms part of every offer. An Abilene electrical contractor says data centers pay electricians about $35 an hour plus overtime and per diem, while he can pay about $20 an hour (Texas Tribune, April 2026). For superintendents and project managers, per diem, rotation schedules and housing often decide the yes or no. Texas has also widened electrician license reciprocity, and Texas State Technical College aims to grow its electrical training programs (Texas Tribune).
The roles we place on Abilene and West Texas data center builds
- General superintendents, superintendents and assistant superintendents
- MEP and electrical superintendents
- Project executives, senior project managers and project managers
- Electrical project managers and project engineers
- MEP coordinators and commissioning managers
- Schedulers, estimators and preconstruction leads
- QA/QC managers and safety managers
Superintendents, electrical superintendents and commissioning managers willing to work rotations are the scarcest people for West Texas campuses.
How an Abilene and West Texas search works with Amundson Group
Every search starts with a short intake call on the scope, the site, the schedule, the reporting line and the deal-breakers. Then we go straight to our network of 90,000+ construction professionals, most of whom are working today and not applying anywhere. Our average time from intake to first qualified resume is 7 hours.
We recruit nationwide from Houston, so we can bring in superintendents and project managers from other Texas markets and other states for West Texas work. Across 1,200+ construction placements for 250+ construction companies, the pattern holds: the best data center hires are passive candidates who move for the right project, the right leader and the right number.
