Who recruits for data center construction in Chicago?
Amundson Group recruits the construction leaders who build data centers in the Chicago area: superintendents, project managers, project engineers, MEP coordinators and commissioning leaders for the general contractors and trade partners working from Elk Grove Village to Joliet and Morris. We are a construction-only recruiter headquartered in Houston, veteran-owned and named to the Inc. 5000 in 2024 and 2025, and we recruit nationwide.
We recruit only for infrastructure and industrial-scale builders: data center, heavy civil, site development, paving, rail, tunnels, wastewater and underground utilities. We do not place commercial, multifamily or energy roles. Our network sits in the field talent pool that builds large industrial and infrastructure projects, the same pool Chicago’s data center campuses draw on.
Chicago data center construction in 2026: the numbers
- 169% more capacity under construction in Chicago at the end of 2025 than a year earlier, per CBRE (Data Center Dynamics, March 2026).
- 2.2% vacancy, with no block of 5 MW or more available this year (CBRE, H1 2026).
- At least $200 billion of data center projects first planned for Illinois were built in other states, per JLL (REJournals, September 2026).
- +5,400 construction jobs in Chicago-Naperville-Schaumburg from August 2025 to August 2026, up 4% (AGC).
- 83% of Illinois contractors with superintendent openings, and 79% with project manager or supervisor openings, call them hard to fill (AGC and NCCER 2026 Workforce Survey, Illinois).
Where the work is
Chicago’s established data center cluster is in the northwest suburbs around Elk Grove Village, Wood Dale and Hoffman Estates. The big new campuses are going southwest of the city, around Joliet, Minooka, Coal City and Morris (CBRE; CBRE, H1 2026; Shaw Local).
In March 2026, the Joliet City Council approved an annexation agreement for a 1.8 GW, 24-building data center campus on 795 acres, with construction planned from early 2027 through 2032 and 7,000 to 10,000 construction jobs (Shaw Local, March 2026). In Coal City, a planned campus has a federally approved transmission service agreement for 864 MW, with local approvals listed as next steps (Village of Coal City), and a 1 GW campus is planned in Morris (CBRE, H1 2026).
Power and policy in 2026
Power is the main limit. CBRE reports that data center projects served by ComEd face power delivery delays until 2032 or later, and ComEd now requires 10-year letters of credit for projects of 50 MW or more (CBRE, February 2026).
Illinois also paused new state data center incentive agreements from July 1, 2026, and the governor asked lawmakers to pass a new framework in the fall veto session. Projects under the state incentive program have had to use project labor agreements (Capitol News Illinois).
What it means for hiring in Chicago
Chicago’s next wave is far from the core. A superintendent who lives in the northwest suburbs is looking at a long drive to Joliet, Coal City or Morris, on projects that run for years. That changes the search: commute, schedule and the length of the commitment matter as much as pay.
Projects under the state incentive program use project labor agreements, so contractors need leaders who have managed union craft labor on large jobs. With 83% of surveyed Illinois contractors that have superintendent openings calling them hard to fill, those people are rarely available without a direct approach.
The roles we place on Chicago data center builds
- General superintendents, superintendents and assistant superintendents
- MEP and electrical superintendents
- Project executives, senior project managers and project managers
- Electrical project managers and project engineers
- MEP coordinators and commissioning managers
- Schedulers, estimators and preconstruction leads
- QA/QC managers and safety managers
Superintendents and project managers willing to commit to multi-year exurban campuses, plus electrical superintendents and commissioning managers, are the critical searches in this market.
How a Chicago search works with Amundson Group
Every search starts with a short intake call on the scope, the site, the schedule, the reporting line and the deal-breakers. Then we go straight to our network of 90,000+ construction professionals, most of whom are working today and not applying anywhere. Our average time from intake to first qualified resume is 7 hours.
We recruit nationwide from Houston, which helps when the right superintendent for a Joliet or Morris campus is finishing a job in another state. Across 1,200+ construction placements for 250+ construction companies, the pattern holds: the best data center hires are passive candidates who move for the right project, the right leader and the right number. We reach them, screen them on real project experience and close them without surprises at offer stage. To start a Chicago search, send us the role.
