Short answer: Amundson Group recruits the people who run underground utility work. We are a veteran-owned, construction-only recruiting firm headquartered in Houston, and underground utilities is one of the eight sectors we recruit for every day. We place utility superintendents, project managers, project engineers, estimators, pipe foremen and pipe crew leads for the contractors who build water, sewer, storm and dry utility systems across the United States. Send us the role and the first qualified resumes arrive in about 7 hours on average, with a vetted shortlist in 7 days.
The underground utility work we recruit for
- Water distribution and transmission: new mains, main replacement programs, valves, hydrants, service lines and the tie-ins that keep customers in water during a cutover.
- Sanitary sewer: gravity sewer, force mains, manholes and the lift station connections on new developments and city rehabilitation programs.
- Storm drainage: storm sewer, box culverts, inlets and detention outfalls on road and site packages.
- Dry utilities: conduit and duct bank for electrical and telecom lines, fiber routes, and the duct banks that feed data center campuses.
- Trenchless crossings: horizontal directional drilling, auger boring and pipe bursting under highways, rail lines and waterways.
- Lead service line replacement: the city and utility programs replacing lead pipes one service at a time.
The roles we fill on an underground utility job
Utility superintendents and general superintendents, project managers and project executives, project engineers and assistant project managers, estimators and chief estimators who price unit price utility work, pipe foremen and pipe crew leads, HDD superintendents and drill crew leads, safety managers with trenching and excavation experience, quality managers, surveyors and grade checkers, and the equipment managers who keep a spread of excavators and boring rigs moving.
What underground utility hires are paid at placement

- Foreman: $87,200
- Project Engineer: $93,340
- Superintendent: $112,200

Why underground utility hiring is hard in 2026
The work is growing faster than the pool of people who can run it. EPA’s 7th Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey puts the drinking water need at $625 billion over 20 years, and EPA’s 2022 Clean Watersheds Needs Survey puts wastewater and stormwater needs at $630 billion over the same span. Under EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, the 10-year clock for replacing lead service lines starts in November 2027. Data center campuses add their own water, sewer and duct bank packages on top.
The people side is just as tight. In the 2026 AGC and NCCER workforce survey, 82% of contractors had open salaried positions, and 87% of those firms said the positions were as hard or harder to fill. A utility superintendent who can run a crew safely in a deep trench, hold a schedule through a live tie-in and work well with a city inspector is usually running a job right now, not reading job boards.
How an underground utility search runs
- Intake: one call on the scope, the crew, the schedule and the pay. One named recruiter owns the search from then on.
- Sourcing: it starts the night you send the role, across a network of 90,000+ construction professionals, aimed at people running utility work for other contractors today.
- First resumes: about 7 hours on average from intake to the first qualified resume, and a vetted shortlist in 7 days.
- Screening: every candidate is screened on the work itself: pipe sizes and depths, trench safety and shoring, tie-ins under live service, crew size, and the agencies and inspectors they have worked with.
- Offer and start: we manage the offer, the per diem and travel terms and the counteroffer risk, then check in at 30, 60 and 90 days after the start date. Placements carry a written replacement guarantee.
- Terms: retained and engaged search, with the fee quoted in writing before the search starts.
