What a junior estimator job actually is

A junior estimator is the first seat on a construction estimating team. The job is to help turn drawings and specifications into a bid: performing quantity takeoffs, requesting and leveling subcontractor and supplier quotes, building unit costs, and assembling the bid package under a senior estimator or chief estimator. In heavy civil, site development, rail, tunnel, wastewater and data center work, that means pricing earthwork, grading, underground utilities, paving, structures and the equipment and crews needed to build them.

Most junior estimator postings in 2026 ask for one to three years of exposure to construction, a degree in construction management or civil engineering or equivalent field experience, and working knowledge of takeoff and estimating software. Field time counts. Candidates who have run a crew, worked as a project engineer, or spent a summer on a survey crew usually read plans faster than candidates who have only seen them in a classroom.

Where the junior estimator jobs are in 2026

Based on what we see across our recruiting desks, junior estimator hiring is concentrated in the growth-heavy segments of the industry: heavy civil contractors chasing highway and bridge work, site and land development contractors pricing utilities and paving, rail and tunnel contractors, wastewater builders, and the general and civil contractors feeding the data center build-out. These are self-perform contractors who need estimators who understand production rates, not just a spreadsheet.

Geographically, the deepest demand we see is in Texas (Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio), Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Nashville, Phoenix, Denver and the Virginia corridor. We also place estimators in California, New York and elsewhere nationwide, because every contractor with an active bid calendar needs a bench behind its senior estimators.

What hiring managers look for in a junior estimator

  • Plan reading. Can the candidate pull accurate quantities from civil drawings and spot what is missing from the scope?
  • Production awareness. Does the candidate understand how a crew and an excavator actually move dirt, and how that drives cost?
  • Software fluency. HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam, Agtek or similar tools are common asks on civil and utility bids.
  • Attention to detail under a deadline. Bid day is unforgiving, and a missed line item is a lost job or a lost margin.
  • Communication. Junior estimators talk to subcontractors, suppliers and field staff all day. Follow-through matters more than polish.
  • Trajectory. Chief estimators hire juniors they can grow into lead estimators within a few years.

What junior estimator jobs pay

Pay for junior estimators varies widely by sector, region and the contractor’s self-perform scope, and the hottest markets and niche specialties pay well above the national entry band. We publish current ranges by role and market in our construction salary guide. Our construction salary data is drawn straight from where the hiring happens, our recruiting desks, across a network of 90,000+ construction professionals, and cross-checked against authoritative sources (BLS, AGC, ENR and industry surveys). It is the market as we actually see it, not scraped job-board averages.

How to land a junior estimator job

  • Lead your resume with projects and scopes, not duties. Name the type of work, the contract size and the software used.
  • Get field exposure if you do not have it. A season as a project engineer or field engineer is the fastest path into an estimating seat.
  • Learn a civil estimating platform before you apply. Contractors will train you, but demonstrated fluency moves you to the top of the stack.
  • Target self-perform contractors in growing sectors. That is where the bid volume, and the hiring, is.
  • Work with a recruiter who specializes in your sector and already knows which chief estimators are adding staff.
