Data center project manager jobs are some of the most competitive construction management openings in the United States in 2026. A data center PM owns the budget, schedule, procurement and owner relationship on a facility where the mechanical and electrical scopes often cost more than the structure itself, and where a missed commissioning date can cost the owner far more than the building. The hiring companies are general contractors, electrical and mechanical contractors, developers and owner-side construction teams, and almost all of them report the same problem: there are not enough qualified candidates to go around.

What a data center project manager actually does

The title looks like any other construction PM job. The day-to-day is different. A data center PM is accountable for:

  • Delivering a mission-critical building, typically on a compressed schedule with firm go-live dates tied to the owner’s customers.
  • Coordinating electrical, mechanical and controls scopes that drive most of the cost and most of the risk.
  • Managing long-lead equipment procurement, including switchgear, generators, transformers, chillers and UPS systems, where a slipped delivery can stall the whole job.
  • Planning and supporting commissioning, from component testing through integrated systems testing.
  • Running owner and consultant communication, change management, cost forecasting and monthly reporting.

Project managers who have carried a hyperscale or colocation build from groundbreaking through energization are the candidates every employer is chasing.

How strong is demand in 2026?

Per AGC and NCCER’s 2026 workforce survey, 76% of firms hiring salaried staff for data center work reported difficulty finding project managers or supervisors, making the PM seat the single biggest bottleneck on many data center schedules. The same survey found 58% of companies doing data center work said these projects increased competition for skilled workers, and 49% reported increased wage pressure. In plain terms, this is a candidate’s market for experienced PMs and a shortage market for the companies trying to hire them. Superintendents, MEP leads, commissioning leaders, estimators and schedulers are cited as hard to fill alongside project managers, so the PM is often recruited as part of a larger team build.

What employers require

Across the data center searches we run, hiring managers consistently ask for:

  • Five or more years of construction project management, with at least one completed data center or comparable mission-critical project.
  • Fluency in MEP coordination and the ability to read single-line diagrams and mechanical schematics.
  • Experience with large electrical and mechanical equipment procurement and vendor management.
  • Commissioning exposure, ideally through Level 4 or Level 5 integrated systems testing.
  • Strong cost control and scheduling skills, usually in Procore or similar platforms and Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project.
  • A construction management, engineering or related degree, or equivalent field experience.

Candidates coming from heavy industrial, hospital or semiconductor work can transition well if they can show MEP-heavy delivery and commissioning experience.

Where the jobs are

Data center project manager openings follow power availability, land and fiber. We recruit for these roles nationwide, with our deepest roots in Texas (Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Fort Worth), the Virginia corridor, Phoenix, Georgia, the Carolinas, Florida, Nashville and Denver. Many positions require relocation or heavy travel to the site, and employers increasingly pay for both.

What data center project managers earn

Because competition for experienced PMs is intense, data center project manager compensation generally runs ahead of equivalent roles in other construction sectors, and total packages often include per diem, relocation support and project completion bonuses. Our construction salary data is drawn straight from where the hiring happens, our recruiting desks, across a network of 90,000+ construction professionals, and cross-checked against authoritative sources (BLS, AGC, ENR and industry surveys). It is the market as we actually see it, not scraped job-board averages. For current ranges by role and region, see our construction salary guide.

Frequently asked questions

What experience do you need for a data center project manager job?

Most employers want five or more years of construction project management plus at least one completed data center or comparable mission-critical project. The non-negotiables are MEP coordination fluency, experience procuring long-lead electrical and mechanical equipment, and hands-on commissioning exposure. Scheduling and cost control skills in tools like Primavera P6 and Procore are expected. Project managers from heavy industrial, hospital or semiconductor work can make the jump if their resume clearly shows MEP-heavy delivery and integrated systems testing. A construction management or engineering degree helps but strong field-based experience is often accepted in its place.

Are data center project manager jobs in demand in 2026?

Yes. Per AGC and NCCER’s 2026 workforce survey, 76% of firms hiring salaried staff for data center work reported difficulty finding project managers or supervisors, and 58% said data center projects increased competition for skilled workers. That makes the PM one of the hardest seats to fill in construction. General contractors, electrical and mechanical contractors, developers and owner-side teams are all hiring, and experienced PMs with a completed data center build frequently receive multiple offers. The shortage also extends to superintendents, MEP leads, commissioning leaders, estimators and schedulers.

How much do data center project managers make?

Compensation for data center project managers generally runs ahead of comparable PM roles in other construction sectors because the talent shortage is so acute, and AGC and NCCER’s 2026 survey found 49% of firms doing data center work reported increased wage pressure. Packages often add per diem, relocation assistance and completion bonuses on top of base salary. Our salary data is drawn straight from our recruiting desks across a network of 90,000+ construction professionals and cross-checked against BLS, AGC, ENR and industry surveys. Current ranges by role and region are published in our construction salary guide.
