Utility Superintendent

The Role

A self-performing contractor is hiring a Utilities Superintendent to lead water and sewer construction projects across North Carolina. You will own personnel, equipment, scheduling, safety, and quality from start to finish, supervising multiple crews and occasionally subcontractors. This is a full-time position where your experience directly impacts on-time, on-budget delivery.

What You Will Run

• Develop thorough understanding of project plans, specifications, and schedules. Review with crews throughout execution to ensure proper work.
• Plan and coordinate material delivery to maintain adequate supply of tools, equipment, and resources.
• Inspect field conditions, identify problems and cost-saving measures, and take corrective action as needed.
• Inspect all work for compliance with contract plans and specifications. Point out deficiencies and correct them.
• Track and verify quantities completed on project. Monitor quality and ensure correct construction procedures are followed.
• Monitor productivity rates and review with crews to maintain or exceed requirements.
• Train, develop, and monitor safety practices including PPE through regular safety meetings and one-on-one coaching.
• Identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or minimize risk.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and NCDOT guidelines.
• Maintain positive relationships with engineers, inspectors, customers, and the public.

What It Takes

• 7 to 10 years of related construction experience preferred.
• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Advanced understanding of construction scheduling, cost control, and crew supervision.
• OSHA 10 or 30 hour certification.
• Trenching safety and confined space certification.
• First Aid/CPR training.
• Current North Carolina Driver’s License.
• Ability to read plans, stakes, and interpret grade.
• Strong communication skills in one-on-one and group settings.
• Proficiency with basic math, measurements, and computer skills.
• Ability to prioritize, multitask, and manage time effectively.
• Team-oriented, safety-oriented, and customer-oriented mindset.

Physical Demands

Extensive outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Standing, sitting, stooping, bending, and crouching for extended periods. Walking on uneven surfaces. Capable of lifting up to 70 pounds. Climbing on and off equipment and into excavations up to 20 feet. Exposure to dust, grease, fuel, concrete, and loud noise. Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed. Travel required.
