A self-performing heavy civil contractor is hiring a Senior Project Manager to lead complex data center, heavy industrial, and telecom projects across the Southeast. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone with 10-25 years of field-proven experience who can manage $10M+ projects with the precision of a business owner.
What You Will Run
You will own the full project lifecycle from contract review through closeout. Your job is to protect margins, beat aggressive schedules, and deliver for high-level clients. You will work 3-4 days per week on-site at project locations in Alabama and Georgia, with travel to other regions as needed for major contracts.
The role demands mastery of six core areas:
- Contract and Scope: Breaking down legal obligations to eliminate free work and catch hidden requirements before they hit the budget.
- Change Order Management: Pricing field deviations on the spot and writing change orders that protect margins without office intervention.
- Budget and Cost Control: Verifying every subcontractor invoice against actual work performed, not just signing checks.
- Communication: Managing RFIs, submittals, and owner correspondence with Fortune 500 clients.
- Scheduling: Building hour-by-hour schedules for fast-track projects using Microsoft Project or Primavera P6.
- Build Execution: Understanding the physical reality of construction, from earthwork volumes to material logistics.
What It Takes
You have 10-25 years managing heavy civil projects. You started in the field and can still bid work because you have actually built it. You know that a 40-ton truck hauls roughly 20 bank cubic yards, not 38. You manage company money like your own checkbook.
You are proficient in Microsoft Project or Primavera P6, RSMeans estimating, and RFI/submittal tracking systems. You have managed unit-price, time-and-materials, and cost-plus contracts. You communicate clearly with high-level clients and solve problems before they become budget issues.
You are honest about what you do not know. You show up professionally to the office and the job site. You are looking for a long-term home, not a two-year stepping stone. You respect the integrity of the industry and do not poach talent from peer firms.
Compensation and Benefits
$125,000 to $155,000 per year. For out-of-town projects, a flat per diem of $3,000 to $3,300 per month covers your accommodations. The company is relocating to a modern headquarters in Alpharetta, GA. For multi-year out-of-town assignments, a 1-2 year trial period on-site is available before relocation is required.
