A self-performing heavy civil contractor is hiring a Senior Estimator to lead bid development and cost strategy on complex sitework projects across North Carolina. This is a hands-on role that sits at the center of project acquisition, requiring deep technical knowledge, vendor management discipline, and the ability to move fast under deadline pressure. If you’ve spent 5+ years estimating earthwork, excavation, or deep foundation work and you want to own the full bid lifecycle at a growing firm, this is worth a conversation.
What You Will Run
You will own estimates from pre-bid through post-award closeout. That means reviewing plans and specs, conducting site visits, managing subcontractor and vendor quotes, performing quantity takeoffs, building cost models, and presenting findings to leadership on bid day. You will coordinate with other estimators, attend plan reviews and bid meetings, and serve as the technical bridge between estimating and project teams once work is awarded.
Post-award, you will hand off estimates to project management, respond to questions as work begins, support value engineering and change orders, and feed lessons learned back into the cost database. You will also visit active projects to validate assumptions and build relationships with subs and vendors for future bids.
What It Takes
- 4-year engineering degree or equivalent technical training and hands-on experience
- 5+ years estimating, engineering, or field experience in heavy civil sitework, earthwork, excavation support, deep foundations, or dewatering
- Proficiency in AGTEK, Excel, Outlook, and Word. HCSS experience preferred
- Ability to read engineering drawings, understand specifications, and calculate quantities and costs accurately
- Strong communication and people skills to work effectively within an estimating team
- Proactive, organized, and able to manage multiple bids simultaneously
- Knowledge of construction equipment, rental rates, and available means and methods
- Safety-minded approach to budgeting and cost control
Compensation and Benefits
$125,000 to $155,000 per year, based on experience.
