Director of Equipment

A self-performing construction contractor in New Mexico is seeking a Director of Equipment to lead strategic fleet management and equipment operations. This is a high-impact leadership role where you will own equipment strategy, capital planning, and vendor relationships that directly affect project delivery and profitability across the company.

What You Will Run

You will oversee all company-owned and rented equipment assets, developing long-term fleet plans that align with operational and financial goals. Your focus is strategy and optimization, not hands-on mechanical work. You will:

  • Build and execute equipment acquisition strategies, evaluating purchase, rental, and RPO models for cost-effectiveness.
  • Negotiate and manage vendor, dealer, and rental provider relationships to secure favorable pricing and service terms.
  • Develop equipment costing models, track utilization and performance across projects, and identify cost optimization opportunities.
  • Coordinate with project managers and field leadership on equipment needs and availability planning.
  • Provide executive-level recommendations to ownership on equipment investments, capital allocation, and risk exposure.
  • Oversee equipment inventory systems, cost allocation, and financial reporting accuracy.
  • Lead maintenance personnel and provide strategic direction on preventative maintenance programs aligned with manufacturer standards.
  • Evaluate repair-versus-replace decisions based on cost, risk, and operational impact.
  • Manage personnel involved in equipment coordination, purchasing, and logistics.

What It Takes

You have 5 to 10 years of construction equipment management, procurement, or operations experience, with demonstrated success in equipment strategy or fleet oversight. You understand heavy construction equipment types, applications, and brand differences. You have proven experience with equipment costing, utilization analysis, lifecycle management, and negotiating purchases, rentals, and RPO agreements.

You bring strong financial and analytical skills, the ability to evaluate ROI and cost models, and working knowledge of preventative maintenance programs at an oversight level. You have experience managing or leading personnel and coordinating across departments. A bachelor’s degree in construction management, business, engineering, or a related field is preferred; high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Compensation

Salary range is 120K to 150K, flexible with experience. Based in Silver City, NM.
