Diesel Mechanic – Syracuse, NY

A self-performing construction contractor in the Syracuse area is hiring a Diesel Mechanic to manage their fleet and keep their equipment running. This is hands-on work where you’ll own the maintenance and repair of heavy construction equipment, trucks, and vehicles. You’ll work both in the shop and in the field, troubleshooting problems and keeping crews moving.

What You Will Run

  • Maintain, repair, and occasionally operate heavy construction equipment including excavators, graders, bulldozers, backhoes, front end loaders, skid steers, asphalt pavers, rollers, reclaimers, soil stabilizers, and milling machines.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment failures on diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Manage shop operations including maintenance scheduling and spare parts inventory control.
  • Operate hand tools and shop equipment: welders, cut-off saws, drill presses, jacks, chain hoists, overhead cranes, vehicle lifts, grease guns, bench grinders, pressure washers, and torches.
  • Travel to jobsites for emergency repair and maintenance of fleet equipment.
  • Maintain on-site stock for routine maintenance including fuel, grease, oil, fluids, filters, and wear parts.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections and document defects in writing.
  • Keep the mechanic’s truck, shop, and yard area organized, clean, and safe.

What It Takes

  • Solid knowledge of heavy construction equipment operation, maintenance, capability, and function.
  • Ability to diagnose problems and work independently to complete daily tasks on schedule.
  • Professionalism and willingness to take direction and feedback.
  • Strong safety mindset. No shortcuts. You prioritize the safety of everyone on the jobsite.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, and follow written and oral instructions.
  • General knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Genuine interest in your coworkers and their needs. Teamwork matters here.
  • Excitement and motivation to show up and do the work right.

The Role

You’ll be the backbone of equipment availability for a busy construction operation. This contractor runs a tight ship and expects the same from their mechanic. You’ll work in the shop and travel to remote locations as needed. The work is real, the equipment is substantial, and the responsibility is genuine.
