The Role
A self-performing heavy civil contractor is hiring a Junior Estimator to support bid development on DOT and infrastructure projects. You’ll own specific scopes of work while building full-cycle estimating skills on a team of 2-6 estimators per pursuit. This is a hands-on role where you’ll grow from scope-focused work toward managing entire bids, depending on your background.
What You Will Run
- Review project plans, specifications, and bid requirements
- Perform quantity takeoffs and assist with full estimate development
- Support estimates on storm drainage, retaining walls, earthwork, roadways, and paving
- Determine labor, equipment, and material costs
- Analyze subcontractor and supplier quotes
- Prepare and assemble bid packages
- Support risk analysis and project logistics review
- Collaborate with Project Management on final pricing
- Assist in estimates from conceptual through construction documents phase
- Support post-bid activities, including buyouts when needed
What It Takes
- 5+ years of experience preferred, flexible for strong junior candidates
- DOT or heavy civil project experience strongly preferred
- Proficiency in HCSS (Bid2Win) and Agtek
- Understanding of construction methods and field operations
- Familiarity with projects $30M+ preferred but not required for junior level
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Organized and adaptable in fast-paced environments
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Team-oriented mindset
The Opportunity
More experienced candidates (5+ years or field/superintendent background) may take ownership of entire bids from start to finish. Less experienced candidates will focus on specific scopes and receive training and mentorship toward full bid responsibility. Either way, you’ll work alongside experienced estimators and grow your skills on real, substantial projects.
