Construction jobs in 2026: the short answer
Construction jobs are the roles that estimate, schedule, supervise and physically build infrastructure and facilities. In 2026 the market for experienced construction talent is still tight, and it is tightest in the sectors building the country’s hardest assets: highways and bridges, site and land development, data centers, rail, tunnels and wastewater plants. Superintendents, project managers, project engineers, estimators, schedulers and foremen with a proven record on that kind of work are in demand. Contractors trying to hire them are competing for a small pool.
What the numbers say about construction hiring right now
The public data points in one direction. Per BLS figures, construction added 22,000 jobs in August 2026 and 120,000 jobs year over year, a 1.5% increase, while construction unemployment sat at 3.1% against 4.1% across all industries. BLS also counted roughly 326,000 open construction positions at the end of July 2026, up 28,000 from the prior month and 21,000 from a year earlier. Associated Builders and Contractors estimates the industry needs to attract 349,000 net new workers in 2026 and 456,000 in 2027 just to keep pace with demand.
Employers feel it on the ground. Per the AGC/NCCER workforce survey, 87% of contractors reported open hourly craft positions and 82% reported open salaried positions, and among firms actively hiring, 88% said craft roles were as hard or harder to fill than the year before.
Put plainly: with construction unemployment at 3.1% and more than 326,000 open positions per BLS, experienced builders are not looking for work in 2026, work is looking for them.
The construction jobs contractors struggle to fill
Across contractor surveys and our own recruiting desks, the same titles come up again and again as difficult hires, especially on mission-critical and infrastructure work:
- Superintendents who can run a heavy civil, site development or data center job from mobilization to closeout
- Project managers with owner-facing experience on public infrastructure or hyperscale builds
- Project engineers and schedulers who understand CPM logic and self-perform crews
- Estimators who have priced earthwork, utilities, paving, rail or tunnel scopes
- Commissioning leads, MEP managers and QA/QC managers on data center projects
- Skilled trades, including electricians, pipefitters and welders
Where the construction jobs are
Demand is national but uneven. The strongest pull we see is in Texas (Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Fort Worth), Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, plus Nashville, Phoenix, Denver and the Virginia corridor, where data center, highway and water programs overlap. We also place construction professionals in California, New York and the rest of the country. Amundson Group recruits nationwide from Houston, Texas, which is our only office.
How to get a construction job in 2026
- Lead with project proof: contract values you managed, scopes you self-performed, schedules you recovered. Hiring managers read that before anything else.
- Name the sector. A highway superintendent and a data center superintendent are different hires, and generic resumes get skipped.
- Know your market value before you interview. Our construction salary guide draws on our recruiting desks across a network of 90,000+ construction professionals, cross-checked against BLS, AGC, ENR and industry surveys. It is the market as we actually see it, not scraped job-board averages.
- Work with a recruiter who specializes in your sector. Specialists hear about roles before they are posted.
How contractors fill construction jobs faster
- Define the must-haves in one page: sector, project size, self-perform expectations, travel and location.
- Decide on compensation before the search starts. In a 3.1% unemployment market, slow offers lose candidates.
- Compress the interview loop. Two rounds and a decision inside a week is what wins experienced superintendents and PMs.
- Use a recruiter with an active network in your sector rather than reposting the same ad. Our average is 7 hours from job intake to first qualified resume.

Frequently asked questions
What are the most in-demand construction jobs in 2026?
Superintendents and project managers top the list, followed by project engineers, schedulers and estimators, especially those with heavy civil, site development or data center experience. On the craft side, electricians, pipefitters and welders remain hard to find, and data center owners are short on commissioning leads, MEP managers and QA/QC managers. Per the AGC/NCCER workforce survey, 87% of contractors reported open hourly craft positions and 82% reported open salaried positions, so the shortage spans both field and office roles. Candidates who can show sector-specific project history are the ones getting multiple offers.
Is it a good time to look for a construction job?
Yes, particularly for experienced professionals. Per BLS figures, construction unemployment was 3.1% in August 2026 against 4.1% across all industries, and the industry added 120,000 jobs year over year with roughly 326,000 positions open at the end of July. Associated Builders and Contractors estimates the industry must attract 349,000 net new workers in 2026 to meet demand. That combination means qualified superintendents, project managers, estimators and skilled trades have leverage on compensation, location and project type. The strongest markets we see are Texas, the Southeast, Phoenix, Denver and the Virginia corridor, with placements nationwide.
How much do construction jobs pay?
Pay varies widely by role, sector, project size and market, so a single number is not useful. A superintendent on a highway program in Texas and one on a data center in Virginia are priced differently. For current ranges by title and region, see our construction salary guide at amundsongroup.com/salary-guide.
