The Role
A self-performing contractor in Houston is hiring a Tunneling Civil Estimator to lead bid development on complex underground construction projects. You will own the full estimating lifecycle, from specification review through award, with direct P&L responsibility. This is independent work that demands precision, speed, and deep tunneling expertise.
What You Will Run
- Evaluate bid specifications and drawings to determine scope, requirements, and estimate strategy
- Solicit, document, and analyze subcontractor and vendor quotations
- Build and maintain bid estimates using HCSS Heavy Bid, including labor, crew, activity, and bid master codebooks
- Coordinate with Project Management teams to review bids, budgets, and project performance
- Transfer bid data to project systems with proper phase codes and budgeting
- Prepare award submittals and track awarded contracts
- Estimate change orders, extra work items, and credits post-award
- Attend pre-bid and pre-construction meetings on jobsites (approximately 25% travel)
- Maintain all working documents and backup data to support estimate figures
What It Takes
- 4-year engineering degree or equivalent technical training and related experience
- 5+ years estimating with extensive background in tunneling and trenchless technologies
- Utility construction experience, specifically MTBM and/or tunneling applications, strongly preferred
- Proficiency in HCSS (Heavy Bid/Heavy Job), Viewpoint (PM and JC modules), and scheduling software (Primavera, MS Project)
- Strong Microsoft Office skills and familiarity with ISQFT cloud-based solicitation software
- Ability to prepare proposals with minimal supervision and manage profit/loss responsibility
- Excellent attention to detail, time management, and ability to work independently
- OSHA Training and strong technical and proposal writing skills required
