Survey Crew Chief – Charlotte, NC
A self-performing contractor in the Charlotte area is scaling their survey operation and looking for an experienced Crew Chief to lead field teams on construction layout, staking, and topographic survey work. This is a hands-on field role with real growth potential into management and CAD-based positions.
What You Will Run
- Construction staking and layout on active job sites across the region
- Topographic surveys using Trimble GPS systems and data collectors
- Field calculations, data verification, and quality control on all survey work
- Reading and interpreting plans, specs, and site layouts
- Maintaining accurate field notes and documentation
- Equipment and vehicle maintenance and oversight
- Direct communication with field crews, contractors, and project stakeholders
What It Takes
- 5+ years of hands-on construction surveying experience
- Strong background in construction layout and utility layouts
- Proven experience with Trimble software and GPS equipment in the field
- Ability to identify and correct measurement errors
- Understanding of staking, monumentation, and marking principles
- Background from an engineering or survey firm preferred
- Comfortable working 90% in the field, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, plus Saturdays as needed
- Reliable, organized, and able to work independently
- Strong communication skills and willingness to work overtime
- Must be local to the Charlotte area, within approximately 65 miles
The Role
Approximately 50 hours per week, 90% field and 10% office. You will lead small crews on a variety of projects, own the quality of your survey work, and report directly to project stakeholders. This is a crew chief position with a clear path to CAD Tech, Field Survey Manager, and Director of Survey roles as the team grows.
Compensation is $25 to $35 per hour, depending on experience, with potential for salary conversion.
