Estimator – SPEC

A self-performing civil construction contractor in Florida is hiring an experienced Estimator to lead their bidding and estimation function. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will own the estimate process from pre-bid through closeout, mentor junior estimators, and directly influence which projects the company pursues and how they are priced.

What you will run

• Lead quantity takeoffs and prepare detailed cost estimates for public and private sector projects, using historical production data, subcontractor quotes, and crew productivity figures to build accurate bids.
• Attend pre-bid meetings and owner meetings to scope work, ask hard questions, and identify risks before the bid is locked.
• Coordinate with the Purchasing Department to source vendors and subcontractors, obtain competitive quotes, and validate cost assumptions.
• Analyze alternate construction methods and design options to recommend the most cost-effective and value-engineered solutions.
• Prepare and submit bids to DOT and other public agencies using electronic formats like Bid Express.
• Estimate extra work items and change orders during project execution, working with project teams to track awarded contracts and cost performance.
• Train and mentor junior estimators and takeoff technicians on process, tools, and best practices.
• Travel occasionally to jobsites, bid meetings, and industry conferences.

What it takes

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Accounting, or related field, or equivalent construction experience.
• Minimum 4 years of construction experience in estimating, operations, or engineering.
• Minimum 4 years using HCSS Heavy Bid.
• Minimum 2 years using Agtek.
• OSHA 10 hour certification required.
• Proven ability to lead and mentor a team of estimators and takeoff technicians.
• Strong analytical skills and comfort with data-driven decision making.
• Willingness to travel occasionally for pre-bid meetings and site visits.

Compensation

$100,000 to $130,000 per year, based on experience and track record.
