Project Engineer – Asheville, NC
A self-performing heavy civil contractor is hiring a Project Engineer to lead field operations on DOT roadway and transportation projects in the Asheville area. This is a field-based role where you’ll own quality control, documentation, and coordination between field crews and the office. If you have DOT project experience and want to run real infrastructure work, this is the role.
What You Will Run
- Daily field operations on DOT roadway and infrastructure projects
- Layout, surveying, and grade verification in the field
- Quality control and compliance with DOT specifications
- RFIs, submittals, change orders, and daily reporting
- Quantity tracking, production metrics, and manpower coordination
- Coordination with Superintendents, Project Managers, subcontractors, and inspectors
- Scheduling updates and cost tracking support
- Project documentation and closeout processes
- Safety standards and site compliance oversight
What It Takes
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
- 2+ years of hands-on experience on DOT projects
- Strong understanding of roadway construction, grading, drainage, utilities, and paving
- Ability to read and interpret civil drawings and technical documents
- Familiarity with DOT specifications, inspection processes, and documentation standards
- Experience with project management software (Procore, Bluebeam, HCSS, or similar preferred)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- EIT certification preferred but not required
