# What Does a Construction Estimator Actually Do?

A construction estimator translates project plans, specifications, and site conditions into detailed cost forecasts before work begins. They perform quantity takeoffs across all trades, solicit and compare subcontractor and supplier bids, review drawings and specs for scope gaps, and build labor, material, equipment, and overhead pricing into a formal bid or budget.

Beyond the numbers, estimators conduct pre-bid site walks to flag constructability issues, identify risks, and apply value engineering where possible. After a bid wins, they hand off their estimates and assumptions to the project management and field teams, a critical transition that sets the project up for success.

Day-to-day, estimators work across takeoff software, spreadsheets, cost databases, and scheduling tools. They collaborate closely with subcontractors, suppliers, PMs, superintendents, and sometimes owners or architects. At smaller firms, one estimator may own the full bid; at larger firms, the work splits by trade or seniority. It's part detective work, part relationship building, and entirely about accuracy and foresight.
