# What Do I Need to Get Started as an Entry-level Construction Project Manager?

Most entry-level project manager roles do not require years of experience, but they do require the right foundation. A bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is the standard credential most employers look for. Beyond that, 0 to 3 years of relevant experience, internships, or co-ops makes you competitive. Many firms will hire coachable recent graduates into Project Engineer or Assistant PM titles as a stepping stone. On the technical side, solid skills in Excel, Word, and Outlook are expected, and familiarity with scheduling software is a bonus. Clear written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn RFIs and change orders on the job are the soft skills that set candidates apart.
