# How Do I Become a Construction Superintendent?

Construction superintendents are built through field experience, not hired straight from school. Most candidates start as a foreman, skilled tradesperson, or field engineer, then work up by proving they can manage schedule, labor, inspections, and subcontractor coordination on live jobsites. Hiring managers look hard at three things: verified on-site leadership, a clean safety record, and strong plan and spec literacy. Daily reporting, conflict resolution, and the ability to forecast and prevent field delays matter as much as technical knowledge. Pay moves with project size and complexity, sector (heavy civil and data center roles tend to run above other work), years of experience, and any relevant certifications.
