## Who recruits for data center construction in Columbus?

Amundson Group recruits the construction leaders who build data centers in Columbus and Central Ohio: superintendents, project managers, project engineers, MEP coordinators and commissioning leaders for the general contractors and trade partners working in New Albany and across the region. We are a construction-only recruiter headquartered in Houston, veteran-owned and named to the Inc. 5000 in 2024 and 2025, and we recruit nationwide.

We recruit only for infrastructure and industrial-scale builders: data center, heavy civil, site development, paving, rail, tunnels, wastewater and underground utilities. We do not place commercial, multifamily or energy roles. Central Ohio’s data center campuses draw on the same heavy civil, site and industrial talent our network is built on.

## Columbus data center construction in 2026: the numbers

- **17,861 MW** of data center load under signed agreements with AEP Ohio: 12,219 MW signed before its data center tariff took effect and 5,642 MW since. The 5,642 MW has projected in-service dates by 2030, and 4,842 MW of it is in Central Ohio ([New Project Media, March 2026](https://newprojectmedia.com/policy-aep-ohio-touts-right-sized-load-as-data-center-pipeline-shrinks-further-under-new-tariff/)).
- **+10,100 jobs** in mining, logging and construction in the Columbus metro from August 2025 to August 2026, up 16% to 72,800 ([AGC](https://www.agc.org/sites/default/files/users/user21902/Metro%20Empl%202026_August_Alpha.pdf)).
- **More than 180** active data center facilities in Ohio, mostly clustered around Columbus ([Data Center Dynamics, August 2026](https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/ohio-regulators-direct-data-center-firms-to-provide-utility-aep-ohio-with-180-days-notice-prior-to-grid-connection/)).
- **Number two in the Great Lakes:** a report from the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center and the Joyce Foundation projects Columbus will pass New York City to become the region’s second-largest data center hub, after Chicago ([WOSU, January 2026](https://www.wosu.org/2026-01-19/columbus-will-become-second-largest-data-center-hub-in-the-great-lakes-region-report-says)).

## Where the work is

In New Albany, northeast of downtown Columbus, a campus designed to draw more than 1 GW of power is nearing completion in 2026 ([WOSU](https://www.wosu.org/2026-01-19/columbus-will-become-second-largest-data-center-hub-in-the-great-lakes-region-report-says)).

Of the data center load AEP Ohio has signed under its new tariff, 4,842 MW is in Central Ohio, which points to years of building ahead for the region’s contractors.

## Power and policy in 2026

AEP Ohio’s data center tariff, approved in July 2025, applies to data centers above 25 MW and requires them to pay for 85% of contracted capacity whether they use it or not. In August 2026, Ohio regulators added a rule that data centers give AEP Ohio 180 days’ notice before joining the grid, with the data center covering the cost of new generation ([Data Center Dynamics](https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/ohio-regulators-direct-data-center-firms-to-provide-utility-aep-ohio-with-180-days-notice-prior-to-grid-connection/)).

On May 27, 2026, Ohio’s governor directed the state Tax Credit Authority to stop considering new data center sales tax exemption requests after its June 1 meeting while a joint committee studies the sector. The pause does not block construction or operation of new data centers ([Ohio Society of CPAs](https://ohiocpa.com/for-the-public/news/2026/05/29/ohio-pauses-data-center-tax-exemptions-amid-growing-debate-over-costs-and-benefits)).

## What it means for hiring in Columbus

Columbus has one of the fastest-growing construction workforces in the country, up 16% in a year, and the signed power agreements point to steady data center work through 2030. With that much growth, most searches here mean recruiting people who are employed on another project or bringing them in from other markets.

The scarcest people in a market moving this fast are the ones who have already energized a large campus: commissioning managers, electrical superintendents and MEP coordinators.

## The roles we place on Columbus data center builds

- General superintendents, superintendents and assistant superintendents
- MEP and electrical superintendents
- Project executives, senior project managers and project managers
- Electrical project managers and project engineers
- MEP coordinators and commissioning managers
- Schedulers, estimators and preconstruction leads
- QA/QC managers and safety managers

## How a Columbus search works with Amundson Group

Every search starts with a short intake call on the scope, the site, the schedule, the reporting line and the deal-breakers. Then we go straight to our network of 90,000+ construction professionals, most of whom are working today and not applying anywhere. Our average time from intake to first qualified resume is 7 hours.

We recruit nationwide from Houston, which matters in Central Ohio, where many of the strongest candidates for a Columbus campus are finishing work in other markets. Across 1,200+ construction placements for 250+ construction companies, the pattern holds: the best data center hires are passive candidates who move for the right project, the right leader and the right number. We reach them, screen them on real project experience and close them without surprises at offer stage. To start a Columbus search, [send us the role](https://amundsongroup.com/hire-talent/).
