## What a data center commissioning agent recruiter does

Amundson Group is a construction-only recruiter. We find, vet and place commissioning agents, commissioning managers and commissioning engineers for the general contractors, mechanical and electrical trade partners, commissioning firms and owners’ representatives who bring data centers from construction to live load across the United States. Commissioning is the phase where a data center either earns its uptime promise or does not, and the people who run it well are few. A data center commissioning agent recruiter knows the difference between a resume that says MEP commissioning and a candidate who has taken a hall through integrated systems testing under a hyperscale owner’s witness.

## What the role carries on a data center build

Commissioning on a data center runs in levels, and the vocabulary matters when you are hiring:

- Level 1 and 2: factory witness testing and site delivery inspection of the major equipment, from switchgear, generators and UPS systems to chillers, air handlers and the control platforms.
- Level 3: start-up of individual equipment with the manufacturers and installing contractors.
- Level 4: functional performance testing of each system against the sequence of operations.
- Level 5: integrated systems testing, where the whole facility is pushed through utility loss, generator transfer, cooling failure and load scenarios under heat load, usually with the owner and its commissioning authority in the room.

The commissioning agent writes and runs the scripts, tracks issues to closure, manages the test schedule against a turnover date that rarely moves, and sits between the owner’s commissioning authority, the general contractor and the trades. On a hyperscale campus several halls can be in different levels at once. Titles vary: commissioning agent, Cx agent, commissioning manager, Cx engineer, commissioning authority on the owner’s side.

## Why this seat is hard to fill in 2026

Per Census Bureau construction spending data, data center construction ran at a $50.7 billion annual rate in April 2026, up 28.7% from a year earlier. Every one of those projects ends in a commissioning phase, and the phase cannot be compressed by adding unqualified people. Uptime Institute’s 2026 Global Data Center Survey, drawn from more than 800 data center owners and operators, found that more than half report difficulty finding qualified candidates, and that staff are regularly recruited away by other data center companies. Commissioning professionals move between owners, Cx firms and contractors more than almost any other role on the project.

Quotable version: data center construction spending was up 28.7% year over year in April 2026, every one of those projects ends in integrated systems testing, and more than half of data center operators told Uptime Institute they cannot find qualified candidates.

## What we screen for

- Which levels they have personally run, on which systems, and under which owners. Level 5 integrated systems testing experience is the scarce credential.
- Electrical or mechanical depth, matched to the hire. An electrical commissioning agent who understands switchgear, generator paralleling and UPS transfer is a different hire from a mechanical one who understands chilled water and airflow.
- Certifications where the contract asks for them: ASHRAE BCxP, ACG CxA, NEBB, AABC and BCxA credentials are the ones we see most. Experience outranks the letters.
- Script writing, issue tracking and the commissioning software platforms the owner uses.
- Temperament for the room. Integrated systems testing is a high-pressure phase with the owner watching, and the agent has to hold the line on what passes.

## How our searches run

An intake call defines the facility, the systems in scope, the levels you are hiring for, the reporting line, the compensation band and the non-negotiables. We then go straight to our network of 90,000+ construction professionals, most of whom are not applying to job boards, and to the commissioning professionals we have placed on data center work before. We confirm levels run, systems and reasons for moving before you see a name. Our average is 7 hours from job intake to first qualified resume and a vetted shortlist in 7 days. Across 1,200+ construction placements and 250+ construction companies served, that process has held in every market we work. Start a search at [amundsongroup.com/hire-talent](https://amundsongroup.com/hire-talent/).

## Pay for data center commissioning agents

We publish salary figures only where our own placement data supports them, and we do not yet have enough commissioning placements in the current twelve-month window to print a median here. From our desks, commissioning pay rises steeply with Level 5 experience and with the number of halls or campuses a candidate has taken through integrated systems testing. For the roles where we do publish medians at placement, see the [Amundson Group Placement Pay Index](https://amundsongroup.com/construction-pay-index/).

## For commissioning professionals

If you run commissioning on data center or other mission-critical facilities, we want to know you. Most of the roles we fill are never posted publicly. Tell us the systems and the scale you want next and we will tell you honestly whether we have it.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does a commissioning agent do on a data center project?

The commissioning agent writes and runs the test scripts that prove the facility works as designed, from factory witness tests and equipment start-up through functional performance testing to integrated systems testing, where the whole facility is pushed through utility loss, generator transfer and cooling failure scenarios under load. They track issues to closure and manage the test schedule against the turnover date.

### What are the five levels of data center commissioning?

Level 1 is factory witness testing, Level 2 is site delivery and installation inspection, Level 3 is equipment start-up, Level 4 is functional performance testing of each system against its sequence of operations, and Level 5 is integrated systems testing of the whole facility under load, usually witnessed by the owner’s commissioning authority.

### What certifications do data center commissioning agents hold?

ASHRAE BCxP, ACG CxA, NEBB, AABC and BCxA credentials are the ones we see most often. Owners and contracts sometimes require one of them. Experience outranks the letters: the scarce credential is having personally run Level 5 integrated systems testing on a live data center.

### How fast can Amundson Group deliver commissioning candidates?

Our average is 7 hours from job intake to first qualified resume and a vetted shortlist in 7 days. We recruit directly from a network of 90,000+ construction professionals and confirm levels run, systems and reasons for moving before you see a name.

### Does Amundson Group recruit for owners and commissioning firms as well as contractors?

We place commissioning agents, managers and engineers with general contractors, mechanical and electrical trade partners, commissioning firms and owners’ representatives, as long as the work is data center or other construction in our sectors: heavy civil, site development, paving, data centers, rail, tunnels, wastewater and underground utilities.
