## What a bridge superintendent job actually is

A bridge superintendent is the field leader responsible for building a bridge structure safely, on schedule and to plan. The role sits on the heavy civil side of construction, usually inside a highway or transportation contractor, and covers substructure and superstructure work: drilled shafts and driven piles, footings and columns, caps, girder erection, decks, approach slabs and the traffic control that surrounds all of it. The superintendent owns the daily plan, the crews, the subcontractors on site and the relationship with the owner’s inspectors.

Bridge superintendent jobs are distinct from general heavy civil superintendent jobs. A roadway superintendent can run grading and paving without ever setting a beam; a bridge superintendent has to understand formwork, rebar, concrete placement sequencing, crane picks and falsework, and has to do it over water, over live traffic or over active rail. Contractors hire for that specific experience, which is why these openings are among the harder ones in heavy civil to fill.

## What hiring managers look for in 2026

Across the bridge superintendent searches Amundson Group runs, the requirements are consistent. Hiring managers want:

- Hands-on structure experience: candidates who came up through carpentry, pile driving or concrete crews and then led bridge work as a foreman or assistant superintendent.
- Knowledge of DOT and owner specifications in the state where the work sits, including inspection, testing and documentation expectations.
- Crane and rigging judgment, including pick planning for girder sets and the ability to work with a lift director.
- Scheduling discipline: building a realistic four-week lookahead, sequencing pours, and coordinating with the project manager and scheduler.
- A clean safety record and the ability to run a toolbox talk that crews actually listen to.
- Comfort traveling or relocating, since bridge projects follow the work.

Certifications such as OSHA 30 and first aid are expected. A degree is a plus but not a requirement; most contractors value a superintendent who has personally built decks over one who has only read about them.

## Where bridge superintendent jobs are

Bridge superintendent jobs track transportation funding and population growth. Amundson Group places bridge and heavy civil superintendents nationwide, with the deepest roots in Texas (Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth), Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, plus Nashville, Phoenix, Denver and the Virginia corridor. We also place and serve clients in California, New York and every other state. Houston, Texas is Amundson Group’s only office; recruiting is done nationally from there.

Amundson Group works heavy civil (highways, bridges, earthwork, grading), site development and land development (utilities, paving), data center, rail, tunnels and wastewater. Amundson Group does not place commercial, energy or oil and gas roles.

## What bridge superintendent jobs pay

We do not publish pay figures on this page. Our construction salary data is drawn straight from where the hiring happens: the base salary agreed at the moment of hire on our own placements, published monthly as medians in the [Construction Placement Pay Index](https://amundsongroup.com/construction-pay-index/). It is the market as we actually see it, not scraped job-board averages. Check the index for the current superintendent medians and the window each figure covers, and see the [salary guide](https://amundsongroup.com/salary-guide/) for how bridge experience, travel and project size tend to move an offer.

## How Amundson Group fills bridge superintendent jobs

Amundson Group is a Houston-headquartered, veteran-owned construction recruiting firm and an Inc. 5000 honoree in 2024 and 2025. We recruit only in construction, which means a bridge superintendent search starts with people who already know the work rather than a generic job post. Searches run on a retained or engaged basis.

The numbers behind that: 1,200+ construction placements to date, a network of 90,000+ construction professionals, 250+ construction companies served, and an average of 7 hours from job intake to first qualified resume.

The process for a bridge superintendent opening looks like this:

- Intake with the hiring manager: structure types, project value, travel expectations, reporting line and what has caused past superintendents to leave.
- Targeted outreach to bridge superintendents and senior bridge foremen in our network, most of whom are not applying to posted jobs.
- Screening on actual structure experience, not just titles: which bridges, which elements, which owners.
- Presentation of qualified candidates, interview coordination, and support through offer and start.

## For superintendents looking for the next bridge

If you run bridge work today and want to see what else is out there, send a resume with the projects you have built and the elements you personally ran. Hiring managers respond to specifics: span lengths, pour volumes, crane sizes, owners. Candidates who can describe a difficult girder set or a redesign they managed in the field move to the front of a search.

Contractors with an open bridge superintendent seat can start a search at [amundsongroup.com/hire-talent](https://amundsongroup.com/hire-talent/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What experience do you need for a bridge superintendent job?

Most contractors want a superintendent who came up through the trades on structures work, such as carpentry, pile driving or concrete crews, and then led bridge elements as a foreman or assistant superintendent. They look for direct experience with drilled shafts or piles, footings, columns, caps, girder erection and decks, plus knowledge of the state DOT specifications on the job. Crane and rigging judgment, scheduling ability and a clean safety record matter as much as years on a resume. A construction degree helps but is rarely required; proven field results carry more weight.

### How is a bridge superintendent different from a heavy civil superintendent?

A heavy civil superintendent may run roadway, grading, drainage and paving and never build a structure. A bridge superintendent specializes in formwork, rebar, concrete sequencing, falsework and crane picks, often over water, live traffic or active rail. Because that skill set is narrower and harder to find, bridge superintendent jobs tend to stay open longer and contractors are more willing to relocate the right person. Many bridge superintendents started as roadway or structures foremen before moving into the lead role.

### Where are bridge superintendent jobs most common?

Bridge openings follow transportation funding and growth. Amundson Group places bridge superintendents nationwide, with the deepest roots in Texas (Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth), Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Nashville, Phoenix, Denver and the Virginia corridor, and we also serve clients in California, New York and every other state. Houston, Texas is our only office. Travel or relocation is common in this role because bridge projects move with the contractor’s backlog.
